A consultation takes about 75 to 90 minutes; an intake session may take longer. Before we start the shiatsu treatment, we discuss your reasons for coming to me, possible causes of any complaints, and the results you wish to achieve. I will ask questions, palpate the pulse at both wrists, and look at your tongue, to find out where the focus of the treatment should lie. The treatment itself is done on a mat on the floor (unless this is too much of a challenge for you, in which case we will do the treatment on the couch or on a chair). There are blankets and lots of cushions to make you comfortable. In most cases, you will lie on your back at first, so I can palpate your belly to feel out the condition of your internal organs. Then, depending on your needs and physical abilities, you can be treated in different positions: on your back, stomach, or either side, or in sitting position. A treatment usually takes about an hour, give or take. Afterwards, you will have plenty of time to slowly ‘wake up’, have a cup of tea, and share your experiences.
